methrowrock: (My Neighbour Totoro)

I liked the show a whole lot. It made me happy while watching it. Burt and Verona were so perfectly imperfect; they were the proverbial FUN in dysfunctional. I loved the script and how it was so subtle and real. I loved the director and how he composed the shots that were breathtaking and nuanced and said so much with so little. There were three shots that I especially liked. The first was of the plane's reflection gliding across the windows. It looked like the plane was swimming across glass panels, which was an interesting way of looking at things. The second was the shot of Burt and Verona sitting upright in the plane, with just enough sunlight streaming in to bathe them both in a dusky glow. The third was of the two of them standing still on the travellator, as the world rushes past them on both flanks. Both shots were so lonely and heartwarming at the same time. Lonely, in the sense that they were soon going to be uprooted from their old lifestyles that they had grown accustomed to with the same people and same places, and they were alone in these vast, unknown cities. But, heartwarming in the sense that they were their own world, they were two halves that made a whole, and they did not need anything or anyone else to complete their lives, so come-what-may-they-are-2gether-4eva and that things were going to be okay, even if the hectic madness outside dared to interfere. And that was basically what the film was about: Burt and Verona's journey to find a new home and them realising that home will be where they have each other. Yes, it is cliched, but oh, you can't help but smile and sigh in adoration at the last scene of them, sitting side-by-side on a wooden porch, looking out at the wide, wide sea. They are perfect together.

The film was surprisingly hilarious as well. Maggie Gyllenhaal was a perfect scream as the pretentious, elitist hippie. I wonder which of my friends will grow up to be like that hahaha. Verona's facial expressions were comedic gold, and Burt's persistent attempts and his childlike eagerness to get Verona's heartbeat racing were so adorable. Then, there was Verona's crude and uninhibited boss and the sobering episode with Burt's brother and the pivotal trampoline scene. Any scene with trampolines= emotional gravitas. It worked for Skins, it worked for Away We Go, and this theory works for me hahaha. My oh my, I loved the show man. The music was beautiful as well, and fitted the mood of the film to a T. Oh, what can I do but wait for a Burt and try to be more like Verona? I need to watch more films like this. Next on the list: Junebug, something that I have wanted to watch for a very long time. So to end off, a screenshot from a funny, funny scene. :) Which is really an excuse to inject this page with more colour hahaha. I really do have an unhealthy fascination with colours haha.
