2010 in 5 minutes
Jan. 5th, 2011 11:03 pmIt has been five days since we bade farewell to the grand ole dame of 2010. What a year it has been. After twelve years of regimented compulsory education, 2010 felt like a breath of fresh air. Freedom, liberation, enrichment, spontaneity, all that and more were within my reach. Get a job? Sure. Watch movies till 7am in the morning? Oh come on, try 10am instead. Plan a free-and-easy trip to Japan? I thought you'd never ask. Everything and anything was possible, and I think I got a little delirious after visualising the seemingly-vast expanse of time I had before me. Nine months worth of blank calendar dates, itching to be filled in with different people and different places. And boy, did I try to squeeze outings after work, meet-ups on off-days, playtimes before work.
So I spent about six months working at Universal Studios. By some stroke of luck, I was assigned to Pantages Hollywood Theatre and met the warmest, sweetest, funniest people there. From bursting out in laughter at mispronunciations, to doing awkward spasms at greeter portal to Kowabunga Kove, to the mandatory Yakult after a mostly mediocre at Take 5, to gossiping on the stairways, I looked forward to work everyday. Especially for after/off work gatherings, be it Teo Heng sessions, or dinners at Just Asia/MAYOPRAWNS, or circling the park before shift starts. I really liked my time there at USS.
Some way through the holidays, I went to Japan with Dilys and Cheryl for 15 days. Oh, it was mind-blowing to be there, and not just because of the heady excitement of being independent in a foreign country for the first time. From the pulsating cosmopolitan vibe of Tokyo, to the tradition-rich paved streets of Kyoto, to the laidback rustic charm of Onomichi, each side was authentically Japanese in a way that I can't describe well. And having been interested in Japanese culture for quite a few years, those two weeks felt like a dream come true.
Of course, dreams must come to an end, so school started soon after. But it wasn't as bad as I had thought. There was the superfun Union Camp with camwhore Imbalings to help kick things off. More importantly, I was finally studying and learning about things that I liked. Hence, that made lectures and tutorials so much more tolerable, and even, enjoyable. No doubt, I owe many thanks to the people I went to lectures with, the new friends I made in tutorials, the friends of friends that I got to know through spontaneous lunches and dinners. It was quite a hecticfun kind of life, heh.
Despite so many wonderful things and people, there was something lacking in 2010, and I think that was personal growth. To paraphrase Carey Mulligan in An Education, I feel older, but not very much wiser. My resolutions for the last year was to be unself-conscious, get some pride and learn the art of patience. All three failed to a certain degree, especially this past month jam-packed with trainings, where I have been retreating further and further into solitude. I don't know, and that's the problem: I never know what's really going on or what's the deal with myself. Argh, I am going to turn twenty soon, yet every post reeks of immaturity and self-centredness. Well, guess it is pretty obvious what this year's resolutions will be...
And continuing the Year of xx, 2010 was the year of... UK/US shows? Does that quantify as a category? Anyway, I kinda went crazy with the torrents middle of year. Gossip Girl, 30 Rock, Modern Family, Community, Better Off Ted, Weeds, Extras, Misfits, The Inbetweeners, Glee, HIMYM, Big Bang Theory, I'm pretty sure the list goes on for a little while longer. Hahaha wonder how I managed to find the time to watch all that.
Lazy to continue, so yeah, that's about it. Goodbye 2010, and hello 2011!
