quicksilver
Jan. 7th, 2011 07:37 pmYesterday was the first (sort-of) outing with MT people. Granted, it happened after training, but hey, it was still pretty fun. Trooped to Vivo with JE, XH, D, and K to catch The Fighter- because we were too unkempt for townie fashionistas- and boy, it was a bloody good show. Lolol did you catch the pun? Anyway.. Christian Bale was phenomenal. The other leads did an amazing job as well, but whoa, I really how he portrayed Dicky. Drug-addled, intoxicated with past glories, and mercurial (but constantly disappointing), it is easy to write Dicky off as a social aphid or a good-for-nothing. But that was still that affable spark, that breezy charm, that magnetic charisma in him that pulled in people's attention and affection. When juxtaposed next to the slow-burning, steady Mickey, it is not hard to see why Mickey was often relegated to the stage wings- because it was Dicky's show ever since, or perhaps even before, he knocked down Sugar Ray Leonard that day in 1978. Add his insecurities (that may have led to his self-delusions), vestiges of talent and short fuse, and you get a complicated character whom you expect the worse of, and who delivers your predictions, yet serves a few surprises here and there. Which is not to say that the rest of the lands were not outstanding. The understated, passive Mickey, the pushy Alice, the tough Charlene, the interactions between them were explosive. I loved how it was shot as well. Snippets of personal interviews, montages of mock-actual footage, the grittiness of Lowell, the stark earthiness of familial/friendly relations. The themes were a little formulaic, but it's cool. Kinda lazy to expound, but I should quit this bad habit, because after the movie, D and JE mentioned something about feminism and under-education in small towns, and I felt like I should watch shows more intelligently hahaha. Oh welllll. Next time! Haha
And after that, sarcasm, Oscar-worthy acting, and the nearness of places. Skating around Candy Empire, wanting but never needing sweet treats. A funny train ride home, no thanks to the banal banter between JE and D. There should be more days like these, but no, it cometh and it goeth away haha. School starts in... three days! But first, Sunday! Wonder how it'd be likeee. Well then, bye.
